Upgrade the monitor - Switch to lcd screen it consumes only 20-45 watts when operated at full capacity like playing a high frame rate game, ordinary CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors the fat ones, uses upto 250 watts when a game is bieng played, normally it uses around 80 watts, thats y modern offices uses lcs screens to save on electricity bills.
Upgrade the processor – in normal day to day usage like surfing the web or listening to music processors mostly lay idle or use 10% of there ability, while playing games they use mostly 80-100% of there ability worst ones are p4 family processors, upgrade them to core 2 duo family processors they are more efficient & powerful, & mostly uses around 60 watts compared to 100 watts of P4s.
Decrease the refresh rate – you can change the refresh rate by going to control panel & clicking on display, choose a low refresh rate like 60 if ur monitor is 15 inches, if u see flickers change it to 70 Hz.
Lower the resolution of screen – the screen resolution have a significant effect on power consumption if u have a CRT monitor, use a low resolution like 800 X 600, the resolution of monitor can be changed by going to control panel & clicking on display.
Don`t use wallpaper or screensavers – use a black background as wallpaper & screensaver, more the colors ur monitor has to display more the power consumption.
Change the power scheme – change the power scheme to portable/laptop even when u r using a desktop as it enables windows to save power by throttling down the processor so when u r not using much processor power it will use lesser power & when performance is needed it will power up as the application demands. u can change the power scheme by going to control panel & clicking on power options.
